New Compton Recording Sudio"Strikes a Chord" with the Community

The Salvation Army in Compton Unveils Affordable Recording Studio in Talent-rich, yet Impoverished, Area

The Salvation Army in Compton, with the help of a generous grant from the Mustard Seed Foundation, is revealing a unique addition to the variety of social services it provides – a brand new, state-of–the-art music recording studio. Compton, while still plagued by poverty and unemployment, is an up-and-coming community in its own right, and one that includes numerous talented musicians. For many young people in the neighborhood, taking classes or renting a music studio is unattainable, but The Salvation Army Compton Corps Community Center is changing that and giving youth the chance to follow their dreams through music.

Welcome to Summer
Written by Rachel Seward

First, I would like to congratulate Captains Martin & Tory Ross on the seven years of leadership, fellowship, passion, and total commitment to The Salvation Army- Compton Corp Community Center. They have consistently done a wonderful job of promoting the unique and magical needs and aspects of the Compton Corp and the community of Compton, CA. The Community Center, because of their love and passion and tenacity
has chronicled a complex and illustrious history, as well as growing amenities for a community they love.

During this time God has used their hard work, passion, leadership, enthusiasm and love for the people of Compton to build on the long established Salvation Army presence in this community.

The city of Modesto is incredibly lucky to have the chance to welcome you in to their community and we know the Ross Family will continue to have much success in doing the Lord’s work there. Thank you for pouring your heart and soul into Compton – you’ve left a legacy that we’re committed to building upon.

ART MATTERS TO THE SLF

SUPPORTING THE ARTS IN ALL FORMS…

An art form is the specific shape, or quality an artistic expression takes. .... It is the source of all true art and science." -Albert Einstein

Generally, art is made with the intention of stimulating thoughts and emotions. In this spirit the SLF is proud to support ALL art form…and in recognition of Erika Chan, a friend, supporter of the GET-A-CUE Challenge and professional colleague a new collaboration has been established in support of the foundations mission – “creating environments of success.”

The first event Dreams & Nightmares was a “huge success” bringing over 400 guests…

Focused on Giving

From the gym in Compton to the playground clean up in Sunland, SLF knows how to help.

Shaun Livingston gives from the heart everyday, and because of this, the Foundation strives for success to fulfill its mission and vision. With so many organizations and opportunities to help, the SLF has learned to focus its charitable giving to make a positive difference and to have a hands-on impact in the community.

Our desire to support youth and families remains close to our heart and guides our decision to focus our giving and community involvement in the following areas:

Youth and Community Involvement

Rachel Seward, Community Relations continues to keep the foundation vibrant. In January 2010, she was elected as Vice Chair to The Salvation Army’s Compton Corp Advisory Board. Rachel also serves as chair of the Fund Development Committee.

The general role Rachel will play on the development committee is to act as a coordinator of funds donated to Compton Corp. In addition, the committee is responsible for developing, implementing long-range fiscal, fund development goals, and plans.

CHARGE OF THE FUND DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE

1. Identify the fund development needs of Compton Corp.

2. Establish fund development long-range goals/plan.

3. Survey current donors to identify interest level, funding preferences,

other potential donors/sponsors, and any current or potential problems.

4. Increase the pool of potential donors/sponsors.

5. Coordinate and facilitate fund development activities with all

committees.

6. Develop professional donor packet identifying full range of

activities.

7. Develop consistent and appropriate acknowledgment to donors/sponsors.

8. Centralize reporting of fund development activities.

When asked if she consider herself a philanthropist?

A: Yes, I feel that for many years I have been a philanthropist. It has not always been monetary, but I have given of my time and effort to help others in my and community.

How do you define philanthropy?

A:  I define Philanthropy as the action of donating money, time, goods, or your efforts to support

a charitable cause. In reality, it means to me the giving of myself or pouring out what has been

given or deposited into my heart, your life into the lives of others. I believe Giving starts within

your heart and extends to your purse.

Shaun Livingston Update

Shaun is doing well!!!

We are all aware of the challenges that faced Shaun since his injury in 2007. All-in-all, since his injury, he has made significant milestones on his journey to full recovery.

While the last couple of years have not been good for his health, over the last several months Shaun has shown stronger than ever steady improvement – a good indication the he is not giving up.

The Oklahoma Thunder did release reserve guards Shaun Livingston and Mike Wilks earlier this year.  However, the word is that Shaun is regarded as a talented player and is head-and tails above Ollie the newest guard on the Thunder.

Shaun is working on putting his 2010 Youth Basketball Camp into play– watch for more details over the next couple of month.

Foundation 2010

2010 looks like a great year of community relations and events for the foundation.  We exist to build strong communities by enriching the lives of underserved youth so that they can attain the highest level of success.  We will continue to work and promote collaborations and build friendships to support our community outreach initiatives.
